We deserve a Ravanaprabhu 4K Theatrical Re-release
I saw the Vallyettan 4K re-release and they have done a good job on the technical side. I enjoyed it quite a bit. But the main thought I was left with after watching it was “How cool would it be if I could see Ravanaprabhu on the big screen in this quality?”
To me, Ravanaprabhu is the single best mass entertainer we have ever had in Malayalam. There may be better / more successful movies but I think Ravanaprabhu captured the popular imagination more than any other movie in this genre, and it has the most amount of “theatre poora parambaakkunna” X factor. It is just an immensely enjoyable film, with an outstanding soundtrack and score, iconic dialogues and fights, a very compelling story and a spectacular Mohanlal performance (truly firing on all cylinders) at its core. Ravanaprabhu was made for the big screen, and I think it is a guaranteed blockbuster if it comes out in 4K in theatres. More than anything, I badly want to have the experience of watching the poondu vilayattam of Mangalassery Neelakandan Karthikeyan on the big screen.
Now first of all, let’s be clear that not every old successful movie needs or even deserves a 4K re-release. Some have done exceptionally well (Sphadikam, Devadoothan, Manichithrathazhu), some have been totally pointless (Anwar, Paleri Manikyam - who was even asking for this?). Quality-wise, it has been a bit random. My favourite remaster was Manichithrathazhu. In Devadoothan there was some weird stuff going on with the sound and editing, and in Sphadikam it was great until the very end when Bhadran tacked on an unnecessary moral science lecture in the tail end (I still enjoyed both films). As far as I am aware, there is already work being done to re release Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, which I’m looking forward to. But there is nothing that excites me more than the idea of a Ravanaprabhu 4K re-release. In fact it is not that Ravanaprabhu deserves a 4K re-release, it is that WE deserve a Ravanaprabhu 4K re-release.
So if Antony Perumbavoor or his kids / employees happen to browse this sub once in a while, please see that I am begging on my knees for a 4K theatrical re-release of Ravanaprabhu. You won’t even have to cut a separate trailer for it. We can all just pretend like the RCM mashup is the trailer: https://youtu.be/530W7sjaApc?si=8irg1thh6e-87bhg
