Why is there so much anti-Hindi sentiment in Maharashtra?

I have never been to Mumbai, but whatever I have read online suggests that Maharashtrians have a language issue with Hindi speakers. The script of Marathi and Hindi is essentially the same, and as a native Hindi speaker, I can understand Marathi to some extent because of my Hindi skills.

In North India, we have states like Punjab, which also have their own language, but I have never seen the same level of resistance to Hindi as in Maharashtra—even though Punjabi is more distinct from Hindi than Marathi is. Even Gujaratis don’t seem to have a problem with Hindi; in fact, a Gujarati PM is advocating for Hindi as a common language.

I don’t mean to offend anyone, but I’m just curious to know why this is the case. One reason I can think of is the large influx of immigrants from UP-Bihar. But if that were the reason, wouldn’t it be more of a demographic issue rather than a language issue?
