🍎 Decoding the mysterious Knocks in Caleb’s Farspace Coded Call

The Mysterious Code: 3 Knocks, Pause, 5 Knocks

  • Inspiration: This x-post by Serra.
  • Audio Context: In Caleb’s call (English and Chinese versions), we hear a distinct knocking sequence: three knocks, a pause, then five knocks.
  • Possible Morse Code: The simplest guess is that if all knocks are short, it could be ... (S) and ..... (5), suggesting S5—though that doesn’t immediately decode into a recognizable word.
  • “3–5” as a Number: Another angle is that the knocks simply reference 3–5, which might hint at a specific chapter (3–5), a date, or a pair of letters (C–E).

Because the game itself uses chapter structuring, I noticed a connection to Chapter 3, Episode 5, where Xavier and MC are running in circles (like a loop) until they take notice of "spatial distortions".

  • These “loops” might also symbolize the cyclical nature of the MC's repeated lives or memory gaps. It’s like a physical echo of the MC's mental sense of going in circles.

3–5: Dimensional Rifts & Spatial Distortions

In many sci-fi or fantasy universes, gravity manipulation doesn’t just affect physical objects— it can also create interesting phenomena like spatial warping or even small-scale rifts. Given that Caleb’s Evol is tied to gravitational control, it’s totally plausible that this ability could produce or be linked to some form of spatial distortion in LaDs' lore.

When you manipulate gravity on a large or precise scale, you’re essentially warping spacetime. In some stories, this can lead to:

  • Mini-wormholes or portals, allowing short-range teleportation or glimpses between two places.
    • This is also the reason why I believe that 14 years ago Caleb's and MC's evol were responsible for creating the Deepspace Tunnel, which essentially is a wormhole.
  • Localized distortions that cause illusions or disorienting effects, hinting at how memory or time might get tangled.

Love and Deepspace’s storyline involves repeated deaths or leaps in time (like the MC's memory issues due to repeated experimentation), Xavier's and Sylus' time travel, Caleb’s gravitational powers could tie into how reality “bends,” possibly letting him affect events from afar or keep track of MC across timelines.

1. Caleb’s Role and Backstory

  1. Explosion & Disappearance
    • Caleb was originally a fighter pilot for the Deepspace Aviation Administration in Skyhaven.
    • He disappeared after their old childhood home exploded, reemerging about a year later with a bionic right arm and higher military rank— implying the Farspace Fleet (or another group) rebuilt or augmented him.
  2. Childhood Experiments
    • Both Caleb and the MC were experimented on as children by an influential—and likely nefarious—corporation: EVER. [comment link as to why I think Caleb was also experimented on]
    • They were eventually adopted by a scientist, their Granny, who went into hiding, implying the experiments produced dangerous results. (and also because of her guilt of killing the MC repeatedly resulting in her amnesia)
      • They were adopted when Caleb was 11, he is 25 right now - making it exactly 14 years after the Chronorift Catastrophe. Perfect timing to go into hiding in the chaos.
    • A note was in another Caleb-trailer stating the experiment must “never be restarted,” suggesting catastrophic consequences if these powers or processes are repeated.
  3. Farspace Fleet Involvement
    • The MC is angry at the Farspace Fleet for their role in repairing Caleb’s arm, suggesting the Fleet may be using or controlling him for their own ends. (see Painful Signal)
    • Caleb’s quick rise in rank hints he has serious abilities (likely tied to his Evol: gravitational manipulation).

.

2. The MC’s Resonance & the Aether Core

  • Amplification Power: The MC’s Evol, “Resonance,” doesn’t function on its own but instead magnifies others’ Evols.
  • Aether Core: Housed in the MC’s heart, it is an immense power source but physically weakens her.

These could be linked to the experiment’s disastrous potential: resonating with someone’s gravity manipulation might warp space-time on a dangerous scale.

.

3. Possible Links to Spatial Distortion

  • Gravity + Resonance: Since Caleb can manipulate gravity, and the MC can boost others’ Evol, combining those abilities may create local (or even large-scale) distortions in reality.
  • Chapter 3–5 Connection: The presence of strange spatial phenomena (e.g., looping paths or warped areas) could trace back to the synergy of these Evols. Hence, the “3-5” knocks in the call might nod toward those distortions or foreshadow the big role they play in the plot.

Speculative Theory: The original experiment that “must never be restarted” could have involved the MC’s Resonance boosting Caleb’s gravitational powers to a level that opened or worsened a spatial rift— The Chronorift Catastrophe. Leading to the surge of Wanderers.

.

4. Why the “Coded” Call Matters

  1. Memory Triggers
    • Caleb says, “I can’t let you forget about me,” referencing the MC’s amnesia from repeated deaths from experimentation (or past lives). The knocks could be a personal “secret signal,” reminding her of some lost piece of their shared history.
  2. Easter Egg for Fans
    • Developers often embed numeric or symbolic hints (like the 3–5 knocks) to point players toward key chapters (Chapter 3, Episode 5) or crucial plot threads.

Alternative Knock-Meaning: S5 Satellite

Although we can’t be sure the Love and Deepspace devs intended to reference an actual Air Force microsatellite, there are some striking parallels worth noting—especially given the game’s themes around militaries, advanced technology, and space anomalies. [source]

Real-World S5: A Quick Overview

  • S5 is an ESPA-class microsatellite built for the Air Force Research Laboratory, with a focus on Space Situational Awareness—specifically, detecting and locating near-GEO (geosynchronous orbit) space objects to keep the GEO satellite catalog updated.
  • Built by Blue Canyon Technologies and integrated with a payload by Applied Defense Systems (ADS), it launched on a Falcon-9 rocket.
  • After deployment, it unfortunately became unresponsive, and another satellite (Mycroft) was tasked to inspect it in orbit.

In essence, real-life S5 is all about monitoring and detecting objects in near-geostationary orbit—essentially a high-tech “eye” in space for the Air Force. (Guys, I think I'm losing my mind here. xD)

.

1. Potential Parallels to Love and Deepspace

  • Military/Aerospace Ties
    • In-game, Caleb quickly rises in the ranks of the Deepspace Aviation Administration (now Farspace Fleet). This leap suggests advanced or specialized missions—akin to the real-world Air Force leveraging cutting-edge technology or special programs (S5-like missions) to track or manage space threats.
  • Detecting Anomalies
    • The real S5’s role: tracking objects near GEO. In Love and Deepspace, they’re dealing with spatial distortions, Wanderers, and possibly “unknowns” coming through rifts. A fictional “S5” program could likewise be about detecting or monitoring these dimensional anomalies or “wormholes” instead of just satellites.
  • S5 as a Hidden Project or Easter Egg
    • If the knocking code S5 is indeed Morse (… = S, ….. = 5), it’s not a stretch to imagine the devs thinking of a “space situation awareness” concept or referencing a hush-hush military project. The real S5 might just be a fun real-world parallel—developers often sneak in references to actual tech or space programs without making them explicit.
  • The “Eye in the Sky” ParallelIn Real Life:
    • S5 (the actual microsat) was meant for Space Situational Awareness—basically tracking satellites, debris, and possibly other objects around Earth’s geosynchronous orbit. In-Game: A “red high-tech eye” in the sky that keeps watch on the MC sounds suspiciously like a surveillance device. It might be scanning for anomalies or tracking certain subjects—like the MC, whose Resonance (and Aether Core) are extremely valuable or dangerous.

.

2. How It Could Fit the Game’s Lore

  • Farspace Fleet’s “S5”: Could be a code name for a secret program that monitors or manipulates spacetime anomalies.
  • Caleb’s Coded Call: The “3-knock, pause, 5-knock” might hint “S5,” nudging fans to connect the dots that he’s part of some advanced operation or referencing a mission name that’s bigger than it seems.
  • Resonance + Gravity: If MC’s Resonance amplifies Caleb’s Gravity Evol, the in-game “S5” might revolve around harnessing (or attempting to track/control) the cosmic disruptions that pair produces—just as real S5 tries to keep an eye on orbiting objects.

.

.

Lore Implications and Speculation

  • Corporation or Fleet-Operated: Whoever’s behind the shady experiments likely funds or controls this “eye.” They could be using it to gather data on the MC’s current Evol levels or emotional state, waiting for a spike in resonance that might be harnessed.
  • Caleb’s Involvement: As a newly promoted Farspace Colonel with a bionic arm, does Caleb know the “eye” is watching the MC, or is he also under constant surveillance? This raises drama: He’s trying to protect her from behind the scenes while the Fleet monitors them both.
  • Link to “Never Restart the Experiment”: The watchers are probably ensuring the MC’s powers (or synergy with Caleb’s gravity) don’t spontaneously recreate the disastrous experiment. The moment it looks like they might, the watchers will intervene—or possibly push for it, if they want that power for themselves.
