Travelling to the Vatican as a man

Ciao Italiani,

I an travelling to the Vatican tomorrow and have a rather odd question. I've heard that you have to cover your knees. I know these rules are usually targeted and enforced for women and often men get away with not having to follow the rules strictly. So I am curious if I wear shorts, will that be a problem? It is currently 36 degrees in rome and would love to avoid pants if I can but would appreciate any insight into this.
