Best do-it-all rifle caliber for hunting?

My dad and I have been thinking about getting a dedicated hunting rifle in a large caliber. My initial thought was to just get something in .308 since we live around the Appalachian mountains, but it got me curious to know if there are any other calibers we should be considering?
