The things I liked in TBOSAS movie (and comparison with the books)
Here's the list of things I thought was well done in the movie. Some of them didn't appear in the books and some of them did. If you haven't read the books, you may want to skip this because I will be mentioning differences between the books and the movies.
1) Lamina. Her actress did a phenomenal job showing a scared girl who didn't want to take part in the games. And her expressions during encounter with Marcus we're amazing. The way Lamina gently touched Marcus, with mercy, the way she fulfilled his last wish even tho it was visible she didn't want to kill him. Her face contorted in pain before she killed him. Yet she overcame her discomfort and disgust, she sacrificed an innocent part of herself to fulfill a dying boy's wish despite her fear. Her sacrifice and selflessness was one of the most moving parts of the movie for me. She showed that even during the hunger games, one can be unselfish. She became one of my favourites
2) Spruce and Lil dying together. There was something terribly tragic about two siblings being murdered together. And Spruce had to die with knowledge he failed to save his sister. And Lil knowing that had she not protested during Arlo's hanging she might not have been arrested and then Spruce wouldn't try to free her, and wouldn't be dying alongside her. They both probably felt like they failed each other. Dying of his wounds was sad, but being hanged along his sister added another layer of tragedy.
3) Lil's defiant face during hanging. Staring directly at people, not blinking, while bruises and scars marked her face as a proof that the peacekeepers tortured her. She looked angry, undefeated, unbroken. She did not give them the satisfaction of breaking her. She reminds me of the Polish resistance members during WW2 who were executed by Nazis and their last words were "Long live Poland" or something similar (I'm Polish myself, hence the example).
Her death in the books was heartbreaking and I can't say i prefer one death over the other, but I haven't seen anyone talking about Lil and i love her so I thought I'd talk about her.
4). The bruises on the faces of Sejanus and Lil. And how Lucy Gray had said minutes before that "The Peacekeepers torture even their own". It shows the brutality of the peacekeepers. Torturing a CIVILIAN woman just because he fiance was involved in a resistance? What can one unarmed woman do against so many Peacekeepers in uniforms, with weapons? Nothing. Yet they tortured her.
And Sejanus? Sejanus who slept in one room with them? Who ate meals with them? Who practiced with them? They beat him too.
There's another layer. Sejanus could have ratted Coriolanus out. Could have and nobody would blame him if he broke under torture. Yet he stayed silent. He said nothing. He endured torture before being murdered, all for Coriolanus. All for the person he considered a friend, a brother.
5) Coral's last words. I wasn't too fond of Coral tbh when I was watching for the first time (MY GIRL LAMINA) but her last words were heartbreaking. A proof that under normal circumstances she would never kill anyone, that she only killed people to survive. It was the Capitol who forced her to kill because of their messed up games. She wasn't some sociopath, just a teenage girl who did what she did because she didn't want to die.
6) The tributes. Wovey taking Lucy's hand. The girl (Teslee?) crying and not leaving her spot when the game began. Lamina crying. They were NOT some merciless killers, just kids and that showed it. Reaper protecting Dill and his morgue. Jessup. So much devastation. .
7) The meeting of the tributes with their mentors. Mentors basically telling the tributes that "WE WONT BE FRIENDS BUT YOU HAVE TO PERFORM GOOD BECAUSE I NEED TO WIN" (and Corals smirk, I liked that smirk) and "you have to win" instead of actually helping them, or even just comforting them. They should have at least pretended they cared about them. I was enraged on behalf of the tributes.
8) Tigris words: you look just like your father, Coriolanus. Self explanatory.
There's probably more, I can't remember now.
