If he played the game better than anyone else, he'd have manipulated everyone all the way through to the end. He optimized for getting himself into the top 3, not for getting himself to win the game. That's what happens when you behave like a rat and burn bridges. He made deals using his toddler daughter's life as leverage - degenerate reprobate behavior, but not necessarily villainous (unless he's being a villain to his daughter)
