Is it actually possible to play as a support sniper in this game?

I've got over 300 hours in Helldivers 2, maxed out all warbonds and ship upgrades.

Is it possible to play as a support sniper? As in, a person finding a high point, settling in, and picking off targets one by one, potentially with a spotter, with targets well over 200m.

Obviously this differs from planet to planet, terrain and such, but every time I've posted up and started firing on a position, I get ganked by a patrol that appears behind me, I assume because the AMR is so loud.

Providing overwatch on an objective would be cool and fun if this happened less.
