California: I was not permitted to vote today

My mind is blown right now. I registered to vote online on July 27 and printed out the receipt that has an affidavit number. Something was definitely wrong with my registration and I called and inquired a few times to figure out what was going on. Something was up with my address.

I also talked to a few local politicians at local events, and they all assured me that I would be permitted to vote.

Forgive me if this is a little disjointed I’m actually crying right now. This election is so important to me. My only consolation is that my preferred candidate is almost assured to win in my state. But I wanted to cast my own vote.

Writing just to share my experience. I thought registering to vote was so easy. They tied it in with your car registration and other things to do. I never imagined that it would come to this.

For those who might want more information the issue is that my mailing address is a post office box. We are permitted to use the street address as our mailing address. The registrar voters considers my address a commercial one and voter registration needs to attach to a residential address. Due to fears of my ex and his temper and vengefulness and guns I’ve avoided using the address where I live, renting from a private landlord and never using that address.

EDIT: Thank you to all who expressed your support. Hopefully the resources given here will help make things like I experienced happen less and less.
