Bulletproofing GX460? Engine/transmission/etc?

Hello all,

I'm potentially looking at adding a GX460 to our household in the next couple of years. Some context: We have a 1st gen Tacoma 4x4 and are very familiar with 3rd generation 4Runners, having owned two.

I also understand that the GX460 doesn't have the absolutely insane durability of the old 5VZ-FE + A340 automatic combination. In particular I understand that the P2714 code is an issue that's been popping up in GX460s as they age.

Is there any way to effectively "bulletproof" (ie do preventative maintenance/upgrades) to a GX460 that hasn't started throwing the P2714 codes? External transmission cooler + Fluid change; new valve body, etc? One thing I did when I got my first 4Runner was immediately put a new radiator in to avoid the common issue of radiator coolant + trans fluid mixing and causing damage to both the engine and transmission + new lower ball joints which are a 3rd generation 4Runner weak point, so I'm fine with doing this.
