How would you start learning the flute?

This might be a silly question, but my sister used to play the flute, however quit a couple years ago. We still have her old flute and I'm thinking of picking it up. However, I'm not quite sure what resources to use in order to help me learn. Has anyone else taught themselves the flute or have any recommendations?
