Best way to find old flight information

I've been trying to find old flight numbers and as much information as possible regarding those numbers.

I saw that flightstats.com provide historical archives for a subscription fee. Does anyone know how substantial their archive is? How far back do they have?

I most often know what dates and between what airports the flights were.
