Embroidering over the edge of fabric?

I’m new to embroidery so I don’t know all the tricks yet. For my next project I need the embroidery to start at the edge of the fabric but every attempt I’ve made looks terrible.

Is there a way to embroider over the edge of fabric or do I need to rethink my project?
