Saturn 4 Ultra & Resin Newbie
Hi all. I bought a Saturn 4 Ultra a few days ago and it should arrive in a few days time. It's my first venture into resin printing.
I've a few preparation related question, to ensure I'm ready for when the printer arrives, but also a few more general resin printing related questions. Here is what I bought so does anyone recommend anything else?
- Saturn 4 Ultra.
- Mercury X Wash & Cure stations.
- Grow tent that should fit the printer + wash station side by side (but not the cure station).
- Carbon filter with inline 4" fan to pull fumes out of the tent via the tents 4" vent/opening. Will duct to a window.
- An A4 sized silicon tray/mat for models to dry after washing, or to air after curing.
- Box of 100 nitrile gloves.
- Respirator with replaceable filters.
- Standard resin and ABS-like resin from elegeoo (1ltr each)
Q1: As I don't have the space for a tent big enough to have all 3 units side by side, is it ok to have the cure station outside the tent or will it still be giving off a lot of fumes/oder during curing? If so, I guess I can swap the wash and cure stations around depending on what's in use at the time? Not ideal but workable?
Q2: IPA vs Ethy Alcohol - where I live it's easy and relatively cheap to get both at 75% concentration but difficult (not impossible) to get anything 90-99%. My research suggests anything below 90% is a waste of time so if that's the case I'll try to get 90%+. Is 99% better than 95%? I've read mixed opinions about 99% being too high and causing issues.
Q3: What's the safest way to store 99% IPA/Ethy? It's potentially dangerous but is there a safe temp range? I'm thinking to put the bottle into a cardboard box and put that into a metal shed in my garden - is this safe enough? I don't want an explosion. Also, any precautions needed to reduce/eliminate evaporation while in the bottle?
Q4: Can IPA be reused and if so how many times? How do you filter it?
Q5. How long should the model sit after printing before I drop it into the wash station? How long should it be in the wash station for? How long should it sit to air dry after washing before putting it into the cure station? How long should it sit in the cure station? I know model size is likely to influence all of this.
Q6: After a print, is it ok to simply pour unused resin back into the original resin bottle or best to have a separate bottle for "used" resin? Should it be filtered after a print before putting it into a bottle, and if so how?
Q7: How long can resin sit in the vat and still be usable? Wondering if that's an option instead of putting it back in a bottle. It would be in a tent so I guess I'd need to leave the extraction fan running 24/7 in that case.
Q8. Are FEP sheets a one-time use item? After every print you bin the FEP and replace with a new one? Or only replace of it gets torn? How best to clean the vat and FEP?
Q9. People seem to damage the screen a lot so any tips on preventing that?
Any other tips you wish someone gave you when starting out would be awesome and very much appreciated. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply :)
