Pets

What are pets for? I tried equipping one (I bought pet coins via diamonds) and I don't see them appear on the battle field (tried story, missions, arena so far). I think I'm gonna regret buying pet coins by using diamonds since there might be another way to obtain pet coins later on in the story. I just finished the story mode of Crimson Temple.
