Help for deck built around "leave the graveyard" effects
Ive wanted to make a deck around Insidious Roots from the second I pulled it, and I decided to pull the trigger recently and challenge myself to build a budget (100ish euro) deck themed around other "leave the graveyard" effects, such as Desecrated Tomb, Skeleton Crew etc.
The deck structure is usually pretty simple, as these payoffs are all token based for the most part, which encourages aristocrat effects and self milling.
The big issue for me at the moment is the commander: I initially tried Sivriss and Cloakwood Hermit but they ended up being clunky and slow. So I compiled a list of alternatives:
Meren: One of the first alternatives I built, she felt the most generically powerful but also encouraged playing some things I didnt care about like symmetrical sac effects and combos.
Izoni, Center of the Web: The one I am testing right now, on paper she seems weak but she does a good job at being an unobtrusive value engine in the command zone which can come down and complement your synergy pieces. The big downside is that most LTG payoffs look at creatures leaving the bin, which makes it less likely you'll want reanimation if the creatures will get collected anyway.
Coram: Encourages using large beaters to reanimate or just voltron, which is beyond the deck's scope, but the second ability is sweet and red adds some funky tech. Same issue with Slimefoot and Squee. Kagha is also similar but overall weaker.
Pharika: The most straight forward commander for a deck like this besides Izoni, she maybe benefits a bit too much from enchantment synergies and the ability is a bit expensive.
The Mycotyrant: Very strong contender, plays a lot more in the mill/sacrifice space but can become super scary.
Hogaak: The gaak has some pretty cool synergy with the deck idea, but is overall "just" a free big guy. That was crazy in modern, probably isnt in EDH.
Tayam: I already have a ton of combo decks so this one's a pass, since it goes infinite with a ham sandwich and is pretty much relegated to CEDH.
Amzu: Not sure if having a LTG enabler in the command zone makes much sense, even moreso when she's more built around Insects overall.
Tormod + GX partner: Same issue as Amzu, white adds some sweet stuff like Atreos and token doublers if you use Sidar but overall, GX partners are very unexciting for this theme.
Which one do you think fits the best? So far ive tried building Meren and she felt strong but made me lean away from some of the cards I wanted to play, and Izoni which is actually super promising.
