I feel my 8-Month-Old Dachshund Puppy May Pass Away

I Feel My 8-Month-Old Dachshund Puppy May Pass Away

Hey Reddit, I need to share what’s been going on with my dachshund puppy. She’s my first dachshund, and while I knew they were food-driven, I had no idea they’d try to eat everything. I’ve been doing my best to puppy-proof my home, but she’s been so sneaky. She is also a very picky eater, which is ironic, and I have bought her different types of kibble.

She’s been sick off and on since she was 3 months old when she had giardia. She’s also dealing with dysbiosis, and about a month ago, we found out she had elevated liver enzymes. The vet did an ultrasound and found sludge in her gallbladder. Thankfully, the sludge is gone now, but we still need to recheck her liver enzymes to see if they’re back to normal.

To make things harder, a few days ago, she chewed up one of her cotton-fabric toys and ate some of the strings. Thankfully, she’s pooped most of it out, but there was also blood in her poop. On top of that, she’s managed to eat plastic chipped off from a hairbrush and even some thin hair ties she found on the floor. I feel awful for not catching these things in time, but I have to leave her home alone with my chiweenie as I work in the mornings.

Now, for the past three nights, she’s been struggling. Last night, she didn’t sleep at all—she’s been in this zombie-like state (pacing around the house nonstop), drooling and looking absolutely exhausted but unable to rest. This zombie-like state isn’t new—it’s something she’s done every time she’s gotten sick. It’s so heartbreaking to see her like this again.

I’m giving her everything the vet instructed: Keosul, activated carbon with egg white, Royal Canin’s Vetenary Diet Gastrointestinal canned food, Proplan Multi-Flora Probiotics, and Meloxicam But even with all of this, she still seems uncomfortable. I feel something is very wrong, and honestly, I’m terrified that she might not make it through this.

What the vet believes is she may now have an obstruction or a puncture in her intestines. I am going to take her to get a CT scan with contrast and see if they find something, and if a puncture is found, the vet will have to perform surgery, which is risky.

I’d love to hear from anyone with dachshund experience or who’s dealt with similar health issues in a puppy. I just want to be the best owner I can be for her, but this little pup has already taught me how tough it can be.

Thanks for reading, and any advice or encouragement would mean the world right now.

P.S. She didn’t fully grow and is really small for her age, and weighs only 3 kg, and she has visible ribs and spine.

TL;DR: My small 8 month dachshund puppy (3 kilos) has been sick off and on since 3 months old with issues like giardia, dysbiosis, and elevated liver enzymes. She’s recently been drooling, restless, and in a zombie-like state (something she does when sick). She’s eaten some non-food items like toy strings, plastic, and hair ties, but most have passed, the last one with blood. I’m giving her vet-prescribed meds and will do a CT scan on her GI tract. I fear she might not make it.
