Edgiest player explodes into offensive rant over the tiniest inconvenience, ruins game
A while back, I was first looking into the concept of online play. I was interested in 5e for a very long time but hadn’t gotten a chance to play outside of school, and my school game wasn’t going well at the moment so I was itching for another Dnd experience. I just thought “screw it, I have time on the weekends, I’ll join another campaign” and I took to the Dungeons and Dragons discord
It worked out surprisingly well, I found an open group and sent the dm a direct message, they approved me. They were a cool dungeon master, and weren’t uptight about character creation at all. It was also their first time dming, so I found it nice that they were doing well already.
Eventually I finished my character, a plasmoid warlock with a backstory of crash landing on Earth and being adopted by tieflings, it was fun. I arrived to the first session with high hopes, and it turned out awesome. (The horror story bit doesn’t start just yet)
We had our cast of heroes:
Me: Plasmoid Warlock
Captain: Human fighter/rogue who was a pirate
Arsonist: Human sorcerer
Dm: The dungeon master
[Those aren’t their real usernames]
We had a fun first session with lots of roleplay and some shenanigans, during which we: plundered some treasure, stole some fish, accidentally burned down an inn (sorcerer did that, which is why I Codenamed him Arsonist), and Captain courted a woman who he abandoned in said burning inn. While that might make us sound like murderhobos, and it probably does, everyone was having fun and laughing. It was so much fun that we lost track of time, and played for about 4 hours.
But… this didn’t end off as good as it started, not by a long shot. Captain invited his friend over, Edgey. I was like “ok, good. 4 players is better than 3”, until I realized just how bad Edgey was, and my problems with him extend way deeper than how he played 5e, as you’re about to see:
The first problem with Edgey was minor, he asked the group how old everyone was, I explained that I was 13. He then proceeded to spam the group chat with nothing but the word “cap 🧢” over and over until every other message was buried. It was easy to ignore at first but soon became intensely annoying. I was worried about session 2 given this guy’s behaviour, but I was just like “don’t worry about it, he hasn’t done anything bad yet”… he was about to tho
To my disappointment, I had to leave the group due to something irl. I left a long winded and apologetic message in chat saying that I enjoyed session one but I had personal problems that I don’t feel comfortable discussing. Edgey response was
“he got hacked, a 13 year old can’t type like that” I still don’t know whether that was a compliment
Me: I didn’t get hacked, bud
And that one word, ‘bud’ made something inside of him snap
He then proceeded to hurl all manners of abuses at me, saying “did you just f*cking call me bud!?” I had no idea this guy considers ‘bud’ to be a top tier insult
“F*ck you b1tch” I couldn’t believe what I was reading, so I replied with “calm down”, Captain then joined and began to try and settle Edgey down, but he wasn’t having any of it. I had enough with his insults, so I retaliated. I don’t exactly remember what I said, something along the lines of “the feeling is mutual”, but I didn’t curse him.
He responded with the single weirdest/grossest thing I’ve heard a human say: “Suck my 🐓 like a lazy nig-“.
I honestly wish I was making that part up, but this guy actually said it. I was beginning to question my sanity at this point and whether or not this was all a dream, so I just left.
Not more than 3 weeks later dm invited me to a different game (they weren’t online at the time of the incident, but I imagine they were as shocked as I was), and I accepted. Captain was in it (don’t know if he was still friends with Edgey or can even comprehend that they were friends to begin with), and we had a lot of fun. That group fell apart for different reasons but it thankfully didn’t include horror story elements
I don’t know what happened to Arsonist, but I wish him luck for his future games. As for Edgey… I think you know how I feel about Edgey
TLDR: Player has a racist and creepy meltdown after I leave the group for personal reasons, causes group to fall apart
