Kane Williamson = the new Sangakkara?

Sangakkara had been playing cricket since 2000, yet he was never mentioned among the best batsmen until 2010’s. Tendulkar, Lara, Dravid and Ponting were generally considered the best batsmen during this period. Yet if one looks at the stats, they might wonder how Sangakkara was frequently over looked when rating batsmen.

The real reason is

  • He averaged 44 in SENA countries,
  • Scored just 6/38 hundreds in SENA,
  • Averaged in the 30’s in 4 test playing nations until the tail end of his career, only in his final England tour he took his average above 40.
  • He also averaged in the 35-36 range for the most part of his ODI career, with the rule changes, his ODI record had vastly improved. Sangakkara is one of the examples of why merely looking at stats to judge a player’s ability is a flawed method.

Same thing with Kane Williamson. He averages 61 at home and then SA - 21 ENG - 30 IND - 33 AUS - 42 SL - 29
