What’s Going On With AI Detectors ?
I’ve been running into a really weird and frustrating issue lately, and I’m wondering if anyone else has noticed the same thing. Back in my first year of uni, I had this situation where a professor accused me of using AI to write an assignment. It was a nightmare because I’d written it myself—I just have a pretty formal writing style. They ran it through an AI detector, and it flagged it as AI-written. I had to go through this whole process of proving it was my own work, showing drafts and all that. It was really annoying.
Since then, I’ve been really careful. Before I submit anything, I always check it on those AI detection sites to make sure it doesn’t get flagged. It was fine for a long time. But recently—like the last month or so—it seems like these detectors are flagging everything. Even stuff I wrote a while back that used to pass as “human” now gets flagged as AI. I even tested casual things, like short emails, and they still come up as AI-written.
What’s going on? Did they update these tools to be stricter or something? Are they just broken now? I’m genuinely worried because I don’t want to get accused of using AI again, especially when I know it’s my own work. Has anyone else noticed this? And does anyone have tips for dealing with it? It’s annoying because these old profs don’t actually know how these AI detectors really work.
