Was old gear that good or was it nostalgia?

Genuine question I’ve wondered. Every person who was in the audio game in the past talks about how their gear was better or how well it performed, and I always see people talking so highly on old gear in forms. So is it nostalgia? Stats wise seems like new gear is better in every aspect but maybe there’s something to it I don’t know about.
