What are some funny stories when you misunderstood a word or phrase, or overall learning in general?
(For full context, we speak Canto in Viet dialect.)
When I was in my single digits, my mom would take me to her friend’s house, and she had a son name Ah Keung ( 阿強 ), which I didn’t think too much about. But when I was watching TVB with my mom at home, the characters referred to a cockroach as 小強, and my head snapped to my mom when I asked, “why did aunty name her son Cockroach? 😧” At home, we call any and all bugs (that don’t fly) “gat jat”, but maybe it’s one of those situations where immigrant parents just teach us “baby” vocabulary, so I’m not too sure.
Needless to say, she just laughed in my face, and didn’t explain, making a clown out of me LMAO
