Should I be worried?

My baby boy has had an irritated eye for a while. At first it was only on the inner corner but now it has spread all around it. Is it pink eye? Did he scratch it one day and continued irritating it since? Is it something worse?? Any help would be appreciated, I don’t want to take him to the vet just for them to tell me it’s just some irritation.
