How do we screw this up every year

Anybody else watching the commanders, wondering how on gods green earth we screw this up every year. They picked second last year. And now they are likely one win away from the Super Bowl. 4-13 to 12-5. I know there’s more at play here, but I just can’t help but be in awe of our own incompetence
