Use Of Tyrosinase Inhibitor Eye Drops To Lighten Iris Color
I am interested in lightening the color of my eyes for cosmetic purposes, or at the very at least exploring potential safe outlooks through which such could be done. After a little bit of research I found AMPT (α-methyltyrosine) which seems to have had a patent (now expired) for this exact purpose along with in-vitro and in-vivo studies both looking at reversing iris melanogenesis caused by melanoma medication. The Wikipedia article indicates side effects associated with inhibition of catecholamine synthesis, but these seem to disappear with coadministration of l-dopa as the mechanism of action of AMPT is inhibition of the tyrosine hydroxylase necessary for catalyzing the hydroxylation of tyrosine to dopa.
Following that mechanism of action d-tyrosine could do the same along with other tyrosinase inhibitors. D-tyrosine even has an active patent for skin whitening creams. As far as I can tell, so long as the eye drop solution is dilute, the worst side effects I anticipate would be tremors related to reduced conversion of tyrosine to dopamine as listed on the aforementioned Wikipedia article. Though these could again be reversed with coadministration of l-tyrosine and l-dopa. Furthermore, considering eye drops would result in minimal transfer to systemic circulation, the effects may only be localized to the eyes. Also, because some people notice more saturated colors / crisper vision with the supplementation of tyrosine and l-dopa due to heightened levels of dopamine in the retina, a tyrosinase inhibitor may have the opposite effect. Though I don't think this would be a problem because eye drops probably don't reach the vitreous humor (or at least do so far less effectively), only the aqueous humor.
What do you guys think?
