Weird Management Decisions

Obviously I'm going go be as generic as possible to avoid identifying myself.

In short, one of the core competencies of my company is extracting text from images (OCR). Machine learning systems have been very good at this for over a decade now, since even before the recent AI bubble. We have some very smart machine learning people who work on this stuff.

Well, for some reason management wants to replace our OCR system with ChatGPT. I keep trying to explain that a custom ML model with business logic coded on top of it will perform this job more cheaply and effectively than a generic chatbot. I even had ChatGPT explain why ChatGPT is not the right tool for this job!

Alas, management are big believers in AGI and basically see ChatGPT as a demigod.
