Merchant won't cancel subscription. Is opening a new bank account to stop the charges excessive?
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but Googling hasn't helped any and I'm discovering I have no idea how bank accounts and such work. 🙃. If a merchant refuses to cancel a subscription and keeps charging you and your banks stop payments don't work, would closing the chequing account and opening a new one with the same bank stop the charges? Or is there some other option that's not an immense hassle? I'm in Canada if that's any relevance to how bank accounts work.
I'm at my wits end with this subscription disputing it every month for 6+ months and paying for stop payment requests that don't work and have no idea what else to do. I have emails from the merchant directly telling me they won't cancel it and can't do anything to help me and to deal with it through my bank but my banks advice was to just do a stop payment request which didn't work when I did it or when the teller did it now the disputes for the charges aren't being approved either. 🫠.
UPDATE if anyone's looking for a solution to something similar 🤷♀️
Stop payments didn't work cause only certain merchants are on a "list" that can be blocked and Google isn't one of them for my bank I guess. Because they refused to cancel at my request my bank reported them as fraudulent and set up a new card in a way that things wouldn't transfer over and I had to ask to opt out of the "Visa Updater" program thing. Haven't been charged this month so seems to have worked. 🤷♀️.
