Thoughts on driving a scooter in Bangkok

I live in a fairly distant neighborhood and need to use grab/bolt daily to get around. As many of you know helmets aren’t rly a thing with the mototaxis. I can’t help but think what would happen if the driver were to crash and I’m not wearing a proper helmet.

I thought about getting a helmet to have with me but it would be annoying to carry it around every time I go somewhere. So now I’ve started to feel like renting a scooter and driving myself would make things a bit easier and in a way also safer (could use a good helmet).

I have 10 years of experience on 2 wheels but Bangkok traffic tends to be kinda crazy and everyone on other threads is advocating against driving yourself.

Are there any people here who drive themselves in Bangkok and what do ya’ll think would be the best way to go about this?
