Some statistics on childhood trauma and BPD
Just watched a YouTube video by Dr Peter Salerno in which he presents some statistics about BPD. He quotes Dr Gregory Lester, whom he describes as "the personality disorder guru, to be sure."
The statistics are surprising. According to Lester:
- 1/3 of adults with BPD experienced no childhood trauma
- 1/3 experienced only "mild" childhood trauma, which Salerno described as falling within the "normal" range
- Only 1/4 experienced severe trauma
- He didn't say anything about the remaining 1/12
I went looking for the primary source, but the information is apparently part of a pricey seminar that I'm not willing to shell out $250 for. I'll assume Salerno is quoting Lester correctly and send the $250 to the BPD Victims Relief Fund instead.
I thought this was worth sharing, since a common belief here and in other BPD-related subreddits is that significant trauma is almost always involved in the development of BPD. If Lester is correct, that's not true.
