Mechanical Engineer in Functional Safety Field?

Hi guys!
Are there any mechanical engineers here that are working in field of functional safety?
Just finished my bachelor degree in mechanical engineering, and worked for the last two years as student project employee on institute of automotive engineering. Couple of days ago i got a job offer from one of our external partners in automotive industry, to work in their team for functional safety. As i know couple of guys already from that team (and they are all electrical or info engineers) i am wondering if the mechanical engineer can find himself in this field of engineering. They are offering to pay for course of ISO 26262 for me as well as certification. But my question is, am i going to be capable to work on analysis of electric/electronic components with my very basic knowledge of them, as a mech. eng. ?

Looking forward to your answers guys as well as well-intentioned advices!
