Connecticut doesn't have maximum hours laws, so does that really mean an employer can legally require you to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?

Apparently there are no Federal laws against it, either. How does that make sense? I recently applied for a position for which if hired they said, while no that draconian, that employees can be required to work double shifts and come back to work in less than 8 hours for the next shift. Apparently, they can make you sleep there when it happens, and that's more overtime pay but why would jobs want overtired people with no work/life balance? Why is that even legal? Surely overworked employees make more mistakes, which in critical industries could create serious problems.
