Opinions on Irish Americans and tips for those looking to embrace their heritage respectfully?
Hello, 28 M from New York here. As a boy and now man with some of the reddest hair you'll see, descending from great grand parents on both family ends who immigrated from Ireland in the 20s, I have always been drawn to learn more about and embrace my heritage more.
Now, I know the stereotypes of Irish Americans and tourists (This new SNL skit doing a great job of illustrating what I mean). I am not so much asking for advice for the kinds of people being satirized in this skit. I am truly looking to connect with and get a very deep understanding of my roots and the culture that my family had both brought with them to America and has dissipated as generations pass on.
I am curious of any thoughts in general about Americans who look to claim back some more Irish identity and how this could be earned and done in a way modern Irish people would accept/respect if possible. Also looking for suggestions/tips/advice in general on getting a better understanding of the Irish people, the cultures, history, and even learning the language (i am very interested in learning Irish, just need the free time to do it but need to find the best class/methods).
I know this post was a little rambley and not so pointed but hopefully the generalness will spark an interesting response or two. Thanks to all who read and any who reply.
God bless
