Does Moscow subway really use a biometric system for tickets?

Hey! I was reading about means of digital identification worldwide and came across this article, which, among other countries, covers the Russian UBS system and its implementation within the country: https://www.observers.com/biometrical-data-too-sensitive-to-be-handled-by-private-companies/

I haven't been to Russia for quite a long now, but it's difficult to imagine paying with your face in the 'metro.' Please share your life experience. Does this system really work, and is it widely accepted? Does it have any use cases outside the subway?
