Pre match talk: Hindsight, did we made the right move choosing Merino over Onana?
Both of them moved in the same summer, with us being linked to both at the same time at one point. Onana costs 15m more, but fair to say its within our range.
Since joining Onana has started pretty well at Villa, scoring goals and bossing midfield. Merino has been injured and no pre season, thus have a stop start campaign.
I must admit that i was disappointed that we didnt get Onana, because i believe him alongside Rice would just boss any team. Distance coverage, long legs and all. Merino isnt up to 100% with us yet to be fair, However, the main criticism of Merino isnt he doesnt know how to play football, but he is quite slow and impacts gameplay, doesnt matter if we gave him 2 months of pre season it wouldn’t make him fast.
However one could argue that watching Aston Villa performance lately, Onana on the other hand hasnt being a ceiling raiser either. So it could be that we signed Onana instead and we would still be where we are.
