Reported assault and got banned from the platform [HN]
I stayed two nights in Roatan, Honduras.
I booked a nice looking place, not cheap for local standards.
Upon arrival I was informed there was no AC. I should have refused the room.
Fast forward to 3am it’s 90F(30C), and 100% humidity I can’t sleep.
I message the host asking when the AC will be fixed and otherwise can I get a refund. The host never apologizes, told me they gave me a good fan and I should be happy. I push a little bit. He starts making fun of my nationality and other personal attacks (on airbnb chat).
Eventually what I said must have aggravated him. He banged on my door loudly. I ignored it and he banged a second time.
I knew intimidation was coming. I got up from my bed and answered the door how I was laying in bed : naked.
Now I’m facing 3 angry men, telling me they’re going to throw me out. And to cover myself (even as they are in my room). Maybe some homophobic expletives. One of the guys makes a move toward me, fist clenched I see blood in his eyes. I tell him : go ahead hit me, throw me in the street.
I think he would have if his colleagues were down for violence. They were not. After this initial push towards me they retreat and leave me alone.
I'm shaking and i barricade myself in my room in case they return. Book something else, get a few hours of sleep and exit quietly in the morning.
I wrote this story to Airbnb but never had anyone live on the phone.
I received two emails : one thanking me for reporting the host and helping making the platform a safer place. Followed immediately by an email saying that I violated the safety guidelines of the platform and will be removed immediately.
I'm still in shock at how little due process I received on this, and how I could still enjoyed the platform had I kept my mouth shut
