How important is the material taught in school?

So Ive been seeing a lot of people say that when they were in college (for all diff careers, not accounting) they were stressing the entire time thinking they’d need to retain and remember everything they learned over several years in school in order to be able to work a job properly, not realizing that most of what they learned for their degree was not applicable to their jobs and it’s really more about experience and critical thinking. I was just wondering if this applies to accounting, because although I never had issues with studying something and doing well on a test afterwards, I do think I struggle with retaining knowledge. I usually need experience. I’m just scared that by the time I finish my degree I’ll forget everything I’ve learned in my first year.
