Language switches with unhelpful translations

I’m in a fandom where like half the characters are bilingual. But not every author approaches it the same way.

Sometimes they specify that text in bold/underlined/italics is a different language.

Sometimes it’s like: “C’est un chat! (It’s a cat)” Character gasped.

Sometimes it’s like: Character A switched to French before speaking to Char B. “It’s a cat,” they said very Frenchly.

And I’ve no issue with any of these!

But on rare occasions there is no translation that the reader can easily get. Like the author will add a “helpful” footnote that the reader will need to scroll to the end notes for to get the translation. Of course I could just make a new tab so I can look at the end notes easier so it’s not a major issue, just a pet peeve.

But holy fuck is it an annoying pet peeve of mine. I know these characters speak French. You know it. We all know it. You don’t need to prove it. I read/watched the same source material as you. It’d save us both time translating if you were to use any of the other three methods instead.

Thanks for listening to my rant..
