Can i play leagues without a membership?

I've heard that you need a membership but the question was 4 years ago, plus the wiki doesn't specify and no one seems to talk about this so I'm asking.

I'm ftp but I have enough gold right now to buy a membership, If a membership is needed, should I spend my gold just to try leagues out? From what I've heard and seen, it's actually really fun.
